For a significant part of my adult life, I was an Osho sannyasin—fully immersed in the communities and culture that sprang up around Bhagwan Shree Rajneesh, also known as Osho (1931-90). Living like this, I observed, firsthand, how matriarchal power structures were actively maintained—ensuring men never took over or reverted the community back to patriarchal norms.
Osho, a controversial Tantric mystic, whilst male, revered the feminine. His ashrams in Pune and Oregon exemplified this, operating a matriarchal structure. Women occupied all the power roles - managing and running the communes, organising work details and food preparation, taking part in local politics. Men were relegated to physical labour, organising construction projects and providing commune security.
One might ask - why did the men not rebel? Why did they tolerate being apparently denigrated in such a manner - assigned menial tasks and bossed around by women?
Was it an S&M kinda thing? No.
Were the men more effeminate or gay? No.
Would they be subject to some form of punishment if they rebelled? No.
Were they drugged or was Osho broadcasting some kind of energy that kept them compliant? No
The answer is sex.
Men, especially of age 40 to 60, will seek power. They will seek to run things—to be the one taking the decisions. They do this for two reasons. Firstly, because power feels good. It’s a huge reinforcement of one’s ego. Secondarily, because women are attracted to men in power, men with status. Get to the top of the ladder and women will inevitably desire to have sex with you. It’s a DNA thing.
But, offer the average 40-60 year old male the possibility of sex with women in their twenties and their desire for power will considerably diminish. Notably because a big chunk of why they’re chasing power in the first place is to get sexual access to such women.
You can easily prove this proposition for yourself, should you be sceptical. Simply find a male in the said age range, one who conforms to the classic “red-blooded male” stereotype. (Perhaps you are such a male.) Ask them if they would willingly give up power, to a woman or anyone else. They will answer “Hell, no!” or words to that effect. Now ask them if they would give up power if they got sexual access to women in their twenties. You will notice that they most definitely stop to give this possibility thought.
In the Osho communes, the women made use of this principle to retain power. The older women, those in power, would encourage the younger women to “explore their sexuality.” The men chased after them and, becoming preoccupied in having sex, would sufficiently lose interest in acquiring power such that the matriarchal structure could continue unhindered. Osho himself, meanwhile, could idle his days away reading, giving talks, being in silence, and generally being a Tantric guru.
Midway through the first half of the twenty-first century, it is clear that there are two aspects to male psychology that actively threaten our continued existence on this planet. One is, as we have mentioned, the desire of the 40-60 year old male to acquire and retain power, and to see any potential challenger for that power as a threat that needs to be destroyed. Yet there is a second aspect too—that of the 18-40 year old male to take risks regardless of the consequences for others. Young men of this age are possessed by the “positive feedback loop” - gaining a thrill from the constant reinvestment of energy, finance or resources in the service of acquiring more. We will just do it, regardless of where it might lead - the ongoing adrenal thrill numbing out any concerns for the consequences.
Recently, the acronym TESCREAL (Transhumanism, Extropianism, Singularitarianism, Cosmism, Rationalism, Effective Altruism, and Longtermism) was coined to denote the dominant ideologies found in Silicon Valley. The underlying trend is to focus on the possible wonders of the future to the exclusion of any concern about what’s happening now or how one might get to this new world. It’s the tech bro’s version of Manifest Destiny and, in reality, it is used to justify taking extreme action regardless of consequences. I doubt that anyone actually believes in any of these visions, not more than superficially—they merely serve to green-light any sacrifice of living people, human culture or resources in their pursuance. The 30 year old tech bro wants to keep feeding the positive feedback loop and merely needs the vision of a bright future to justify his service to the machine.
Now, it must also be said that both of these afore-mentioned traits in the male psyche have led us to produce technological marvels and to transform our society, making it radically distinct from that of just a few generations back. Credit where credit is due. For much of our history as a species, these aspects of the male have proven a net positive. Yet, as the clock continues ticking and more and more of the earth’s resources - human and material - progressively come under the control of an increasingly small number of such males, one must inevitably ask the question—how much longer can we keep doing this? How long before calamity inevitably occurs? These aspects of male psychology, once beneficial, now need to be addressed.
I am sure that you see where this article is heading. Might AI-driven sexbots, resembling attractive 20 year old women, serve to sufficiently distract a large number of power-seeking males from furthering the ascent of techno-capitalism to the point it destroys us all? Might they tip the balance of global power back in the favour of matriarchal structures?
Initially, my own judgement about this possibility was that, for sure, your average beta incel will go there. But what about the apex tech bros of Silicon Valley? Would they? However, I’d say that the social autism and need for control common to this group actually will lead to niched, personalised sexbots become the main companions for these guys. We shall see.
Lemurian Pushback, by the author, is on Amazon here.
When we reach the point where we have AI sexbots advanced enough for lots of men to have sex with, you think "power-seeking males" will still be the driver of techno-capitalism? I don't think they will need to be distracted because humanity will be irrelevant at that point. Unless I'm mistaken regarding your premise, I don't see how sophisticated humanoid robots would curtail techno-capitalism from "destroying us all." Interesting read nonetheless. I think these "cunt horror slaves," or what Nick Land calls them, will be everywhere in 5-10 years. And it's remarkable that it isn't really in public consciousness right now.
Thought provoking! Thanks for opening this. I volunteered 3 weeks at osho Leela last year. I noticed a clear divide - women inside buildings, men working outside. (At least as far a Leela staff concerned, volunteers were a bit more mixed, and there were a few women staff veg growing .).
Power struggles and playful high energy games I had going on with women there, not men. It was lovely to sit doing wonderfully nothing with the debop crew, a nice contrast to the world of fuss🙂.
Deffo power struggles with opposite genders, it seemed baked in, physically energetic when meeting. The volunteer women got a lot of work done.
I've noticed a natural attraction and direct meeting with certain women recent years, way younger than I'd have expected, - mid twenties to mid thirties. The bright natural psychiclly switched on ones. Honestly seems completely natural, and very attractive both sexually and sweetness wise.
I wonder if our accepted social norms are very narrow and biologically unnatural?
Actually out norms are fucking ridiculous! At least as I sense them in myself, ... Society scorns behaviour that is utterly natural and harmless as though it's mass axe murdering rapists dumping nuclear waste. Such a drama queen layer, which I guess I'm not alone in sensing.
Is that inhibition a control mechanism? Maybe just my personal guilt trip.... Maybe not.
I have no idea about sex bots saving the world, but that's a great provocation "read this article" line, you're naturally provocative!
I've just been working in several community farms around Bristol, all fine and fun, one is certainly a matriarchy, one a mini patriarchy, and a larger farm more mixed I think.
With hindsight a matriarchy is an absolute blocker for me at some point, that farm was very good educationally, and psychologically nurturing at first, but I was starting to bang my head against it's walls. To her credit the manager told me about the larger place out in the Mendips.
Surely the top dog tech bros will continue undistracted by sex bots?
Hmmm... I'm wondering if I'd get bored pretty quickly, even with fully convincing hallucinogenic bot sex....
Because, there's no challenge, there's no ...." I wonder....if...hmm" ...edgy excitement of a crossing boundaries with a real human being is something unique. Like the difference between a held group work, and a feral real life fuck-up situation.
Thanks for the chewing inspiration Devaraj, helps me to see some of the same dynamics in ordinary world as in those communities. I wouldn't become aware of it otherwise, I have an invisible veil over " normal" which Hazes these things out.
