January 8th and Zuckerberg has announced that he’s tilting away from the EU model of "fact checking" (er, censorship) and towards Musk and Trump. Nick Clegg is also out of Meta and Trump ally Dana White in. That brings Facebook, Instagram and X into alignment behind the free speech model of social media.
Meanwhile, Musk is pounding Starmer and pushing the AfD in Germany. Trump is jibing about making Canada the 51st State and saying he wants the Panama Canal and Greenland too.
What is going on?
I suspect that Trump’s win in November was not a random populist thing. Rather it was a co-ordinated move by numerous trad US big business players to take back control of the West and to drive it forwards. Panama is vital to re-establish and increase the US’s capacity to project sea power, which always has been its thing, given its location. Greenland, I suspect, may be handy towards the same end. This to reassert domainance in the face of Chinese mercantile expansionism.
The West has been using the tactic of “soft power” to facilitate its globalist ambitions since the disastrous Iraq war of 2003, where the world came to see the US as burger guzzling psychos bombing everything in their path. Enter nice guy Obama who always checked in with his allies how they felt about US strategy. Enter projecting images of the wonderful Western way of democracy into the minds of the world’s young, getting them to rise up and regime change the West’s political opponents.
But now that phase is visibly over. The EU and Soros backed NGOs, forever the frontline of soft power, have been seen through by the locals and no one but a few pissed off students can be arsed with the protests anymore.
Soft power has visibly failed. Alpha dominator capitalism is back. The EU is out of the deal and firmly in the crosshairs of the new right. The UK, already on the verge of collapse, is being marked as a base from which the New America can project land power into Eurasia - a 51st, 52nd or 53rd state, depending on how long the Brits can last out, and assuming the UK Establishment even want to. The euro is marked for death and Brussels will become just the capital of Belgium again.
Change is in the air and the face behind the future is becoming visible.
Great post! Since the Thirteen Colonies won their independence from Britain and created the USA, it has always been expansionist, and since Monroe and especially the war with Spain, avowedly colonialist (why isn't Puerto Rico a State?) and imperialist. Of course Trump wants Canada and Greenland and Airstrip One (and probably Mexico and the rest as far as the Panama canal) - that was always Washington's endgame...
