Yes, I've wondered how much support for Brexit was a consequence of assigning personal failures on EU. Conspiracy theory is consolation for losers. Speaking as long time conspiracy theorist and Brexiteer.

Yes, there are a lot of interesting things around how certain narratives attract us. Especially in a world where we have so many different ones to choose from. Mass culture would struggle to survive, I think, in a world where we didn't have simple and straightforward blame-objects (ie politicians) close to hand.

Interesting and thought provoking article. I think it can go the other way too. I have seen people go down the rabbit holes too far and end up frozen in fear.

Yes, it was one of my more exploratory pieces, where I just start writing, with a vague idea, and then keep going until I reach some kind of conclusion.

I was actually intending to look more at how narratives, especially as a mass phenomenon, attract believers based around repressed, unconscious issues, as opposed to whether they are rational or not. And how this principle may be increasingly shaping our society.

That principle could also apply with fear. People with high levels of submerged fear may find themselves, at a time when that dynamic is trying to shift, very attracted to scary worldviews.
